Question by Bonitta: Do you think I have multiple sclerosis?
For the last 13 months I have had multiple viral/bacterial illness’s. At the end of each I get a terrible headache that lasts for days, the last was 10 days long( at the first of this month). I have lingering fatigue with these headaches. Unusual sounds in my ears, hearing loss, and with the most recent episode I developed a buzzing sound in my ears. It is constant and is currently still there. The other symptoms that have developed over the last year are left leg and arm weakness, tingling, pins and needles, vibration like a pager going off on my left hip, seeing things in my peripheral vision, balance off, stumble towards the left, clumsiness with my left hand, an itch on bottom of my right foot that was a nerve, lasted for 12 mon. Symptoms that are new this month are, weakness and tingling in my other arm, leg and scalp, ocularmigraine, tremors in eyelids, right arm, jaw and upper lip, and EXTREME FATIGUE. I can’t explain the depth of this fatigue. My hands stay swollen, one day I lost my ability to speak normally for the entire day. Loss of appetite/taste. I wake up with stinging sensation on my tongue several times. I had an MRI of my brain. It shows multiple nonspecific foci in white matter regions. I do have a long history of mild anxiety and arthritis in my neck. My PCP says it is all related to my neck, the neurologist says it is anxiety and worry. What should I do. If it is something serious like MS I know early intervention is vital. Yet I don’t want to alienate myself with my MD’s because of the small size of network that my insurance will pay for. Please advise.

A vitamin B12 test should be requested. Healthy serum levels are over 800pg/ml or 600pmol/l. A urinary methylmalonic acid test is more accurate and aids in the diagnosis of B12 deficiency. Along with this, check your thyroid..a full thyroid panel is recommended – TSH, free T3, free T4 and thyroid antibodies just to rule this out as the cause of swelling.
