There are few things in life as frightening as the prospect of losing control over one’s body, and in turn, one’s independence. That’s what makes a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis so devastating – the possibility that one-day you might not be able to walk anymore, see clearly, or hold on to anything in your hands. But what makes MS really insidious is its unpredictability. People with MS don’t know what their condition might be from hour to hour, let alone from week to week, or year to year. The

HEALTH / SELF-HELP”Judy Graham’s book should be essential reading for all with MS and for the families and friends of those suffering. It is up-beat without being facile, and it surveys the field simply and intelligently. The clear way in which Ms. Graham tackles the contentious issue of diet is extremely welcome.” –Yoga Journal”There is no doubt that this book is by far the most comprehensive, objective, and scientifically sound overview of all the options a person with MS has to help keep the

Many people are finding that they can gain a large measure of relief from the pain symptoms of MS by getting involved in a regular exercise program; you may find that your local MS support group can help you with this. Meditation and yoga are also popular options as both teach you how to relax both your mind and body, which have been proven to be useful in pain management. One therapy that seems to be gaining ground in both popularity and success rates is the use of yoga. Yoga involves the stretching and relaxing of the muscles in the body. The whole purpose of this type of exercise is to help the person to relax and bring their body back to its metaphysical center. The stretching and relaxing of their muscles has been found help alleviate the muscle pains in the arms of MS patients.
Should the disease progress in the active stages of multiple sclerosis, the second phase is the relapsing/remission stage where the patient is likely to experience a series of exacerbation or active symptoms such as optic neuritis, slurred speech, weakness of the extremities and so forth. This is the point at which the majority of patients seek medical help. In many patients there is distinct spastic hemiparesis, which presents itself as a weakness or loss of use of one side of the body, either in the arms or legs. This can make it difficult to hold onto things and can cause a person to appear clumsy, experience excessive stiffness, stumble and fall down unexpectedly. An MRI scan of the brain may not show any lesions at this point, but may show atrophy of the spinal cord.
Because multiple sclerosis is a disease that attacks the central nervous system, the pains can occur suddenly, be excruciating and then be gone just as quickly. Other pains can be chronic and last for hours or days; either type of pain needs to be dealt with as they can definitely take away from the patient’s quality of life. Some of the medication that you are taking can also be responsible for joint pain; Avonex, Betaseron and Rebif all have joint pain as one of their most common side effects. If you think this might be the cause of your joint pain pay attention to the level of pain you have during the first 3 days after you take your medication and where the pain is.
There are several different approaches to the treatment of the pain of MS ranging from a variety of drug that seems to be continuing to grow to more naturalistic approaches that also seem to work for many patients. The drugs being used at the moment consist of anticonvulsant such as might be used for epilepsy and antidepressants. The secondary progressive stage is far more aggressive and manifests itself as having much shorter time spans between exacerbations causing more damage and reducing the patient’s chances of recovering fully significantly. For the patient who is in the progressive relapsing stages of multiple sclerosis the damage that is done by the lesions is far more severe, resulting in permanent damage and is often fatal.

Question by Emeka N: What type of Medicine are you taking for your Multiple Sclerosis?
My brother who is now 24 yrs old has Multiple Sclerosis (MS). He went from jogging 2-3 times and week, playing basketball everyday to barely holding his self up. He can’t walk more than 5 feet without leaning on someone or something. This kills me! He had minor symptoms of MS in the beginning but as soon as he started taking his medicine, it got a lot worst I believe.
I just wanted to ask what medicine do you MS patients have? My brother said Mitt Romney’s wife has it and hers have went into remission after she started taking “eastern” medication. I don’t know if that’s true or not. If someone that has MS can tell me what type of medicine there doctor has them using and after what time period did they start seeing results? Please ONLY MS patients need reply
If you have a story on how you overcame it or how a treatment effected your MS in a good way, please share your story. Your reply would be appreciated! Thanks!

There is no specific treatment. Corticosteriod drugs may hasten recovery from an attack. Physiotherapy, drugs to relieve muscle spasm, & walking aids help to maintain mobility.

Question by jonb4more: What is the natural cure for Diabetes and Multiple sclerosis?
You always hear about natural cures for diseases, but you never hear of what they are or even the treatments. I’ve heard there is a natural cure for Herpes, diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, and hypertension, but no one ever seems to know what they are, or where they can be found. I have even read that book ‘Natural Cures “They” Don’t Want You to Know About’ by Kevin Trudeau and he just beats around the bush. Is there anyone out there with solid evidence and answers?
