Pain – Medical Marijuana – Multiple Sclerosis – Texas – Compassion – Tim Timmons

Posted by admin Comments (4)

ABC News interview with Texas medical marijuana pain patient Tim Timmons and Texas Compassion Care Coalition President Steve Betzen. Timmons has suffered from secondary progressive multiple sclerosis for 23 years and is housebound and bedfast. and needs full-time nursing care. But the politics of Texas Republican Governor Rick Perry would put him behind prison bars with rapists and felons – all at a cost to Texas taxpayers of 0000 to 0000 annually. This is his new-age version of fiscal conservatism.

Famous People with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) 3of7

Posted by admin Comments (0)

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disease of the Central Nervous System (CNS) – that’s the brain and spinal cord. Predominantly, it is a disease of the “white matter” tissue. The white matter is made up of nerve fibres which are responsible for transmitting communication signals both internally within the CNS and between the CNS and the nerves supplying rest of the body. In people affected by MS, patches of damage called plaques or lesions appear in seemingly random areas of the CNS white matter. At the site of a lesion, a nerve insulating material, called myelin, is lost. I shall explain this process in more detail later. Clinically, MS is a hard condition to characterise because it is very unpredictable and variable. Depending on which areas of the CNS are affected and how badly they are damaged, the type and severity of symptoms can vary greatly. No two people get MS in exactly the same way and the expression of each individual’s disease is as unique as their fingerprints. However, the different courses of the disease, both within an individual and within the whole population, principally differ in their timing, location and severity. Underneath similar processes (including demyelination and sometimes other forms of nerve degeneration) are going on. Although recent research indicates that the biochemical make-up of lesions may vary between different forms of the disease, this is not the reason why people with MS (PwMS) have such widely differing symptoms

Tysabri and the risk of PML

Posted by admin Comments (22)

Update on Tysabri and PML: Company Releases Details of Cases and Risks According to information released on October 29, 2009 by Biogen Idec, there have been 24 confirmed cases of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML, a viral infection of the brain that usually leads to death or severe disability) among people who have used Tysabri® (natalizumab, Biogen Idec and Elan Pharmaceuticals) after it became available for prescription in July 2006. As of the end of September 2009, 60700 people have used Tysabri worldwide. Although the absolute risk for PML in patients treated with Tysabri cannot be precisely determined, the sponsor has now released data suggesting that the risk increases with increasing time on therapy, starting out lower than the one-in-one thousand level that was estimated at the time of Tysabris re-approval in 2006, and rising after two years of infusions to about one in one thousand. There is insufficient information to determine the risk of PML in those who have been on therapy for three years or more. Right now only 2000 people have been on the therapy for over three years. This release followed an October 23 announcement from the EMEA, the European equivalent of the US FDA, indicating that one of its advisory committees was launching a review of the risks and benefits of Tysabri in light of the increasing number of new cases of PML. Signs of PML: Typical symptoms associated with PML progress quickly over days to weeks, and can include

Yoga Empowered Online for Chronic Illness- Beginning Breath Awareness

Posted by admin Comments (0)

Number One- always honor your body. Never push the breath. Talk to a doctor before beginning. Don’t sue me. Got it?! Bringing your awareness to your breath is key. We breathe all the time yet pay so little attention. Let this become a practice in your life. Pay attention to your breath. Watch the video for a how-to. In a nutshell- 1. 3 out breaths. 2. notice the 4 parts of the breath 3. use full torso breath inhale- fill the collar bones, the rib cage- softening the belly at the very end. exhale- pull navel to spine, like zipping a zipper in a pair of tight jeans. 4. take four or more natural breaths before exiting your practice. By inhaling this way- the breath facilitates a natural lift in the spine, creating length & lifting the heart (rib cage). By exhaling this way- you build strength & stability in the low back, sacral & belly areas (who doesn’t need that eh?!) Take this practice into your life. You can do it every time you think about it- notice how often you find yourself holding your breath. It always surprises me. But make no judgment- just notice.
